ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Where can you find clowns, skits and dancing dogs all in one place? No, not the circus but the Albany Civic Center. Its all part of the 19th annual Kids Fire Safety Day, an event that fire inspector Tom Wilson has been a part of for the last five years.

"I love it. When I was first involved with the Albany Fire Department in this program, I've never seen a program like that, every year I commit myself to working this program," Wilson said.

Kids Fire Safety Day is meant to inform and educate Albany youth about how to protect themselves from fires, that includes knowing how to identify when a fire might occur and how to escape from the area if one does break out.

Wilson continues, "Kids are the number one victims we have in fires and the elderly, so we have to work with each one differently to keep everybody is fire safe."

It is also a way to help parents get involved by educating them on the importance of checking smoke detectors, a simple task that sometimes can be forgotten. For Assistant Fire Chief Rubin Jordan it's something people need to make a habit of, especially before going to bed.

"During the day time if you're awake its no problem, its in the night time that's when we really, really need the smoke detector to work, to alert us, to wake us up," Jordan said.

Those at the fire department say it's an issue they often come across but they hope the program will help families safe.

Presentation is set to begin at 9:30am in the Albany Civic Center.
