Farmers optimistic on cotton harvest

Despite an unusually wet year, South Georgia farmers are optimistic about the cotton harvest that's now underway.

Planting was delayed in the spring due to rain but Turner County Extension Agent Scott Utley says this year should still turn out to be good.

"We've had some big rainfall events and we were worried about them at one time that it would leech out our fertilizer and cause some drowned out areas, which it has," Utley said. "Overall, it actually benefited this year's crop."

Utley says about 10 to 15-percent of the cotton crop has already been harvested.
