ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A major downtown Albany road is undergoing construction and will remain closed through Friday.

Monday, crews started installing brick crosswalks, trees and pedestrian lights in the 100 block of Pine Avenue.  The work is part of an ongoing $450 downtown beautification project to attract more businesses and residents to the area.

"We're just trying to mimic some of the work we've already done along Front Street, and things of that nature.  And it's just a beautification method.  It's also a traffic calming method when you change surfaces...and making our downtown more walk able.  So that's what's this project is all about," said Aaron Blair, Downtown Manager.

Blair said the work will make the area safer.

He said the next part of the beautification project will take place at Jackson Street and the 300 block of West Broad Avenue.
