If you’re out and about today make sure you stay hydrated. Temperatures will feel much warmer than they really are. It's the hottest day of summer and South Georgians are beating the heat by staying cool at Turtle Park. More >>

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The wind is whipping and the waves are roiling on the Gulf Coast as Tropical Storm Karen approaches.  Residents there are getting ready, and so is the American Red Cross.

Emergency response vehicles from Georgia to Louisiana are on standby, and volunteers are ready to open shelters.  With heavy rain expected in our area from the storm, it's a good time to make sure you have a disaster kit and an emergency plan.

"We want people to be aware and tell their relatives if they are in an area that is affected to please make a safety kit, and have it ready so if you needed to leave your house in an emergency you will be ready to go," Lara Gill, Executive Director, American Red Cross.

Some of the things you need in your disaster kit are a 3-day supply of water, flashlight, battery operated radio, food, and medicine.

The American Red Cross has emergency apps for your phone that can help you prepare. To download The American Red Cross APP visit http://www.redcross.org/prepare/mobile-apps
