MOULTRIE, GA (WALB) -

Many South Georgia Public Works employees are on standby as tropical storm Karen moves closer to shore.

The Moultrie Public Works department has been gearing up for the possible flooding from expected heavy rain.

The assistant director said employees will monitor flood prone areas, specifically around the Cox School District, Clay Street, Park Ave. and Talmadge Drive.  He said workers are clearing lots of leaves and straw from storm drains throughout the city.

"Fortunately, we hadn't had a lot of rain lately, so that's gonna be an advantage to us as far as the moisture in the ground," said Daniel Lawson, Assistant Public Works Director.  "Normally, when you have a lot of moisture, it loosens up the trees, but with the low amount of rainfall this month, we should be okay."

Lawson said the department has filled several palates with sandbags and advises residents to clear storm drains and ditches near their homes.

Anyone who needs assistance or experiences flooding can call the public works department at (229) 668-5423.
