Fallen Hotshot's football jersey to be retired

MAYER, AZ (CBS5) -

One of the fallen Prescott Hotshots will be honored tonight at his old school.

Travis Carter was a student at Orme School, a preparatory school near Mayer, starting in 1993. He was considered an outstanding athlete on the football team and was an all state, all conference player. As tailback, he scored 16 touchdowns in his senior year in 1999.

Friday night, the school will hold a football jersey retiring ceremony for Carter. The ceremony is taking place on homecoming night. A barbecue will start the festivities at 5 p.m., then the ceremony and game will commence.

Carter's family and the firefighter community has been invited to attend.

Carter began his firefighter career in 2001 as a hotshot. He joined the Granite Mountain Hotshot crew in 2008.

It was July 2013 when Carter was with 18 other Hotshots fighting the Yarnell Hill Fire. The winds pushed the flames back, causing the men to be trapped. There were no survivors.
