Students get hands on in construction, engineering

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

A career fair Thursday showed 450 south Georgia students what it's like to work in the construction and engineering fields.

Students learned how to build a shed, put a bridge together, drive a front loader, weld metal, and more.

The event is designed to encourage these middle and high schoolers to pursue construction-related degrees at Wiregrass Tech after they graduate high school.

"We've got some very startling statistics that are troublesome when we think about how few young people are coming into our industry and who's going to build our buildings in the future," said Bill Chambless, with Associated General Contractors of Georgia.

Officials say it's harder to recruit students when they're in their 30's and 40's. So, they're looking for younger students to train to fill construction jobs.
