ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany Fire Department officials say they've seen an increase in false alarm calls to 911 recently. They say they will prosecute people for prank calls.

Wednesday night the Fire Department responded to five false alarm calls about structure fires in two hours. Investigators are going over the recordings of those 911 calls.

They believe they came from the Brierwood Drive area of East Albany, and could have been made by the same person.

Officials say prank calls could slow response to a real emergency. "It absolutely will endanger others because the public safety is not available to take care of them when their hour of need arises. Because we're answering false alarms because people are playing with the 911 system," said AFD Investigator Sam Harris.

Unlawful conduct during 911 call is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 12-months in jail and a $500 fine.
