AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

The man who was shot at a funeral Wednesday is expected to survive a gunshot to the chest, and his condition is improving, according to officials.

Helen Anne Cason, 62, is accused of shooting the estranged husband of her daughter, Jack Aycock.

Cason is in jail in Americus, ahead of a bond hearing set for 4 p.m. Thursday. She is charged with Aggravated Assault, Possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, multiple counts of Reckless Conduct and Cruelty to Children. More charges could be pending.

Aycock, 53, of Americus, was attending the funeral of his mother, when he was shot in the chest.

He was taken to Phoebe Sumter Hospital Wednesday, where he underwent surgery.

Meanwhile, officials ordered a psychological evaluation for Cason, to determine if she has dementia. Results of the evaluation could be complete in one week.

Cason has also been put on suicide watch by jail officials, but there was no immediate word on whether she had made specific statements to law enforcement.
