AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

Charges were filed Thursday against a woman accused of shooting her son-in-law outside a Sumter County church where a funeral had been held for the victim's mother.

62-year-old Helen Cason is charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and reckless conduct.

Investigators say she walked up to 53-year-old Jack Aycock outside Concord Methodist Church, pulled a gun, and shot him.

Relatives say Cason suffers from dementia but law enforcement says the shooting stemmed from an ongoing family feud.

Aycock is in the critical care unit at Phoebe Sumter Hospital in Americus where he underwent surgery Wednesday.

Cason is being held in the Sumter County Jail.
