SUMTER COUNTY, GA -

A Sumter County man was shot in the chest as he attended his mother's funeral at Concord Methodist Church in Sumter County Wednesday afternoon.

53 year old Jack Aycock was shot in the chest outside Concord Methodist Church just west of Americus. He was taken to Phoebe Sumter Hospital for surgery and has been listed in stable condition.

Investigators say Aycock was shot by his estranged wife's mother, Helen Cason. She was taken to the Sumter County jail to be questioned.

Sumter County Sheriff Pete Smith said Cason participated in the funeral, and even sang during the ceremony. Sheriff Smith said it was as everyone was leaving that Cason shot Aycock.

Officials believe the confrontation and shooting stems from a family feud.

Deputies also questioned dozens of witnesses to the shooting. No motive for the shooting has been released.
