Kids get Flu shots

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Flu season is upon us. Already, five confirmed cases of influenza have been reported in Dougherty County, some of those in children.

Southwest District Public Health and 10 south Georgia school systems are hard at work making sure elementary students get their vaccine before the season gets worse. Last winter a severe flu strain swept through the country...

It was a rush for many to get vaccinated. Elementary students in Dougherty County are already getting a head start on protecting themselves against the flu.

"We're trying to catch it before the flu season gets here," Said Adult Health and Infectious Disease Supervisor Alice Rodman. For the second year in a row Southwest Georgia Public is offering the flu vaccine to elementary schools in Dougherty and nine other counties.

But the vaccines protect more than just the students. "This helps to keep the parents at work and the children in school," said Rodman. Parental consent is needed and the vaccine, which protect against four strains of influenza, are offered via shot or nasal spray.

It recommended anyone six months or older get vaccinated and there's good reason to do it now. "We have five cases already in Dougherty County. Most of those children," said Rodman.

While the CDC witnessed more children than ever get vaccinated last year, they hope to see that number surpassed again this year. October is the time when flu shots are recommended. Contact your local health department for more information on the vaccine.
