Viewpoint: Shutdown- Dysfunction Personified

Ladies and gentlemen, your United States Federal Government has closed.  Sounds like the beginning of some Hollywood drama that couldn't really happen in the "real world, right?

Wrong and it's not the first time … even more troubling.

And in case you were thinking a government shutdown was as bad as things could get … in a little over two weeks our Treasury Department will have maxed out its credit limit and will begin running short on cash to pay our nation's bills.

The United States of America could conceivably have a government that is shutdown and be a defaulter on monetary obligations.  Is your head spinning yet or are you like me and looking for a head in Washington to spin? And for the record, according to the Congressional Research Service, the two previous shutdowns-in late 1995 and early 1996- cost the country $1.4 billion dollars.

Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.

So what does today look like following the dysfunction personified in Washington … 800,000 federal workers are furloughed without pay affecting everything from national parks to the Internal Revenue Service.  And for you, if you are applying for a federal home loan, would like a passport or a gun permit – it's not going to happen until our leaders in get their acts together.

I'm afraid history will continue to repeat itself unless "We the People" hold the President and all currently elected Congressional leaders accountable for this mess during the next election cycle.

If we don't, we have only ourselves to blame.
