Cavaliers baseball team getting into swing of things

Opening day is three months away, but the Darton State baseball team is already on the field.

The Cavaliers are now fully into fall baseball preparations.

They'll play about 10 games this fall, but head coach Scot Hemmings says it isn't about winning and losing.

Darton State is coming off the program's most successful season in history, setting the Cavalier record for wins in a season.

But Hemmings is now leading a team with 20 freshman.

These fall workouts he says are about getting those guys up to speed with how things are done in the program.

That's a lot easier when you've had the type of success the Cavs have had since Hemmings took over, but he says they haven't gotten where they want to go just yet.

"We've won 85 games in the last two years, and we've been very fortunate here in our first two years," says Hemmings. "But we've still not attained what we're here to do and that's win a championship."

Hemmings says he reminds his team everyday just how close the program has been.

"We focus on the 85 wins, the Division One signees, the guys being drafted, the scouts here," he says. "But at the end of the day, we came up one game short last year and I keep reminding them about that."

The Cavs will play a few more games over the next month, including a home battle against Wallace Dothan Wednesday at 3 p.m..
