South Georgia gets its first scenic byway

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

South Georgia is getting its first scenic byway. The Georgia Department of Transportation created the program to recognize scenic routes around the state. Today Albany city commissioners gave the go ahead to proceed with a byway that starts in Albany.

There are more than a dozen scenic byways around the state, but this will be the first one in south Georgia. City officials say this will help boost tourism and attract visitors to Albany.

Old Highway 3 was once called the Dixie Highway. It was a route created in the early 1900s to connect the midwest with the South.

Now, with unanimous approval by the Albany city commission, this will be designated as a scenic byway.

The route will start at the Bridge house and run south to Oglethorpe Boulevard and east to Radium springs road. It will continue south along Old highway 3 to Thomasville.

"This will get people off of the four lane highway and off I-75, bring people off I-85 to the scenic byway, those who are not in a hurry to get from point A to point B and are just looking for the scenic byways."

City officials say this will help boost tourism for Albany.

"It will give people a chance to go to the flint riverquarium, Chehaw, just learn about everything that albany has to offer, whereas, they might not take that opportunity seeing a scenic byway."

The only requirement is that no more billboards can be posted along the route.

"In some towns that's a good thing, they like having the open space and being able for people to enjoy the canopy of oaks, the agricultural , the fields, all of the things that we have here in soutwest georgia, many people don't know how cotton is grown, we are find out that some travelers think peanuts are grown on a vine."

The route will pass through Dougherty, Mitchell, and Thomas counties.

Convention and visitor bureau officials say it will take one to two years to get the designation listed on the Georgia department of Transportation maps.

The route passes through Albany, Baconton, Camilla,Pelham, and Thomasville.
