VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

The Haven Battered Women's Shelter in Valdosta can now help more victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse.

On Tuesday, community leaders were joined by Georgia First Lady Sandra Deal at the new $1 million shelter for a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The new facility has 26 beds with private bathrooms in all bedrooms, a play room for children, plus a larger kitchen and living room.

Last year, The Haven housed 900 victims who stay on average six to eight weeks.

"We are so thankful that this has been established and this new building has been built here to give a haven for these mothers and children so they can have safety," said Georgia's First Lady, Sandra Deal.

The Haven is the only state certified women's shelter in its nine county service area.

The building was funded by a Community Development Block Grant and donations.
