PLAINS, GA (WALB) -

Former President and Plains native Jimmy Carter is celebrating his 89th birthday today.

On Thursday, Carter will be a recipient of the first-ever Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Lifetime Achievement Award.

One Americus resident spoke glowingly about Carter and an experience he had with him

"I think a lot of times President Jimmy doesn't get the credit that he deserves for the good things that he does," said Bruce Hall. "I've been to his Sunday school class, you couldn't ask for a finer message of the Lord's book than what he gives."

Carter took part in the Peanut festival in Americus this past weekend
