ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Albany Police Department's Family Protection Unit hosted a free Mandated Reporter Training session Tuesday, and attendees were told that even volunteers are required to report suspected child abuse.

This a new change in the law, and includes little league coaches, chaperones, and any volunteers that are around children in the performance of their duties.

The training, held at the law enforcement center, was recommended for anyone in a childcare providing role, even on a volunteer basis.

"[That includes] little League coaches. Any coach, any volunteer within a school system," said Albany Police Investigator Chanita Salyer. "If a parent goes on a field trip with the school, they are now mandated reporters.  It also includes librarians who provide any type of child services within the library."

POST credits were available for law enforcement in attendance.

Representatives speaking from the Georgia Office of The Child Advocate, Lily Pad, Dougherty County DFACS, and Aspire were on hand.

For more information, contact the Family Protection Unit at (229) 431-2123.
