ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Captain Craig Dodd of the Dougherty County Sheriff's Office held a news conference this morning in downtown Albany to alert the public that a scammer is trying to bilk Mediacom Cable customers out of money.

Someone is posing as a Mediacom representative in an effort to snag personal banking information. While deputies work to track the scammer down they want people to not fall victim. The Dougherty Sheriff's Office starting receiving complaints last week. At least half-a-dozen from people suspicious of a caller claiming to be from Mediacom Cable.

"In order to keep from getting cut off. They would have to give bank information or direct payment information from their checking account," said Dougherty County Sheriff's Capt. Craig Dodd.

Dodd says so far it doesn't appear anyone has fallen victim to the scammer who is anything but professional. "He slurs his words a lot. He talks real slow. So they didn't take him seriously," Dodd said.

The caller is using a cell phone to contact potential victims. It's a local 229 number. Mediacom contacts its customers from a toll free 800 number. And while the scammer is no pro, some could still fall victim.

"That doesn't mean that he can't hurt you financially by getting your information and using it on the internet to make purchases or drain your bank account."

We tried calling the number today to see if we could a hold of the would-be scammer. All we got was a voicemail. But sheriff's investigators are confident they'll catch the guy. "We will track the phone number down to whoever is in possession of it and we'll wake them up one morning."

Until then be wary of anyone calling for your personal information. Investigators believe many people may have been contacted who haven't come forward and if you did give out your information, contact the Dougherty County Sheriff's Office immediately.
