The Vietnam Moving Wall stops in Adel

COOK CO., GA (WALB) -

After nearly two years of planning, The Vietnam Moving Wall is now on display in Cook County.

In a sea of more than 58,000 names, Marine Corps Corporal James Barrett searches for a sergeant in his platoon.

Corporal Barrett is the most decorated Vietnam vet in Cook County. With two purple hearts, the navy cross, and countless other medals, he says he's fortunate that his name didn't end up on this wall.

Although it's a honor to have it stop in Adel, for Barrett it brings up some rough memories. "It's bad, it's bad. There's a lot of good men on this wall and they'll never be forgotten."

Fourteen names on this wall are from Cook County. Nearly two years ago the moving wall committee formed and worked tirelessly to bring it to Adel. After raising about $20,000, on Friday it shone under the south Georgia sun.

"It's floored us. There's really not words I can tell you on how special it is we were able to get this," said Tim Blach, Moving Wall Committee.

It's a wall that's traveled for 30 years. And for these folks, just to touch a name means everything.

"I don't think it will ever be back in an area this close. I'm fortunate to see it," said Barrett.

As Barrett and his war buddies reunite, he remembers those who helped him survive. "Decorations are nice to have, but you didn't earn it all by yourself. I don't feel like it."

And behind him etched in marble, are the ones we'll never forget who gave their lives for our freedom.

The moving wall will be on display at the Welcome Center off Exit 39 in Adel until September 30th.
