ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Dougherty County School Board today officially extended the interim superintendent's contract until June 2014.

Dr. David Mosely will continue to make $175,000 a year, even though he is now considered a part-time employee.

The board has been searching for a permanent superintendent since Dr. David Mosely took the interim position.   Thursday, the state school board approved a waiver to a new state law that prevents retirees from collecting their retirement benefits if they go back to work for the state at full-time.  Now, Mosely will work part-time  so he won't have to give up his retirement pay.

Under the agreement, the board will be legally bound to pay Mosely's existing salary as a 49% employee until June 30th.

"A salaried employee is required to do what eve he's required to do in whatever time period he has to do it, so I don't expect any diminishing of effort or anything like that by the superintendent," said Tommy Coleman, Dougherty County School Board Attorney.

In addition to his $175,000 salary, Mosely will continue to collect his $153,000 dollar annual retirement pay.

Some board members voiced concerns about hiring the Georgia School Board Association to assist the county with a replacement if Mosely was slated to stay until the end of June.  They asked if Mosely could instead be placed as a month-to-month employee, but agreed not to hire a new superintendent before June 1st.

The school board will soon begin a search for a full-time replacement to take over from Mosely in June.
