Worth County leaders say employees will be paid Friday

SYLVESTER, GA (WALB) -

Worth County leaders say public employees will get their paychecks Friday.

Thursday, the county was still waiting to be approved for a $350,000 loan from Heritage Bank to cover employee salaries.

On Tuesday, commissioners learned the county only had about 40-thousand-dollars in the bank.  Chairman Mike Cosby said the county took out a $750,000 dollar tax anticipation note in July, but that money is almost gone, forcing commissioners to take out another loan.

"The employees do not have to worry about their paychecks.  It never was an issue.  The only thing that was brought up is the acquisition or transferring of funds.  But it got sort of blown out of proportion," said Joe Gaines, Worth County Commissioner.

Gaines said the county would have cashed in some CDs as a back-up plan to ensure payments.

Commissioners voted against a tax increase last July.  They said incoming property taxes and insurance refund checks will allow them to meet expenditures, and they have no plans to raise taxes.
