Gang arrests are up

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Albany Gang Task Force reports they have made more gang arrests so far this year and are tracking more known gang members than in recent years, but that is a good thing.

The Gang Task Force says from January through June of this year they made 227 gang arrests. That's a four percent increase over last year's 218 arrests, and much more than the first half of 2011.

The Gang Task Force also reports they are tracking 102 known gang members; an increase over the last two years. They say the increases are thanks to the community's help reporting gang crimes.

"The community is calling us and helping us out a lot more. We always said that a collaborative effort between the community as well as the police department was always a good thing," said Sgt. Duron Thompson of the Gang Task Force.

The Gang Task Force said that there are four active gangs in Albany now, the Rattlers, Crips, Bloods, and Gangsta Disciples, but there are a number of sects from each of those gang operating independently.
