South GA health plans most expensive in the state

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

South Georgians will have fewer options and pay more than anyone else in the state for health care coverage under new plans offered through Obamacare.

Thursday, the Department of Health and Human Services released the cost of premiums for policies purchased in Georgia under a new exchange. It will be set up by the federal government because the state refused to expand Medicaid or run an exchange system itself.

People in the two regions that cover our area will pay vastly higher premiums than people in the other 14 regions of Georgia.

Uninsured folks will be able to choose from four levels of coverage, bronze to platinum levels. The cheapest silver level will cost an average of $304 a month statewide, but the cost in the Albany region is $360.

Folks in our area will only be able to choose from a total of 15 plans from one provider. In the Atlanta region, people can pick from 73 plans issued by six companies. That competition means much lower prices.

The lowest bronze plan in metro Atlanta will run $156 a month. In Albany the equivalent plan will cost $291. That's more than the cheapest gold plan in the Atlanta area which will cost $204 compared to $462 in Albany.
