ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

An Albany Special Olympian received a statewide award from a football legend Wednesday night.

Antron Shepherd was selected by Special Olympics Georgia as September's Athlete of the month.

Former Miami Dolphins defensive end and Albany resident Bill Stanfill presented Antron with his trophy.

Antron has won more than 40 medals in his career. He says he was surprised to win this award and thinks it's due to hitting so many home runs playing softball.

"Thanks to everyone because thanks to them, I wouldn't be here," said Antron Shepherd.

"I am so proud of him for doing what's he's done and I'm sure he'll be just as proud of that award as I am of this," said Bill Stanfill.

Antron plays 6 sports, but his favorite is softball.
