ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A former member of our WALB family is honored with a grant in his name. The Rotary Club of Tifton launched the Joe Courson Media Chair for the organization.

It will fund annual grants to teachers in the media field with the best ideas to foster academic excellence. Club members are now in the process of raising at least $25,000. Members felt this was the best way to honor Courson who died in July.

"Joe was truly a genius at what he did. He was wrapped up in journalism from the time or before he went to school," said Mike Brumby of the Rotary Club.

Courson was a longtime employee of the UGA Extension Service and did 10 Country stories around South Georgia for WALB. Teachers can apply for the grant in his name through the Rotary Club liaisons in the Tift County School System.
