TIFTON, GA (WALB) -

A program that provided nearly 40,000 meals to South Georgia kids in need this summer may soon expand to an after school program.

The Tift Area YMCA's "Food for Thought" program has been feeding children under the age of 18 for the last three years with the help of Walmart grants.  They're partnered with Tift and Tuner County Schools and several local organizations.

Roughly 22,000 lunches were served in Tift County and nearly 19,000 were served in Turner County last summer.

"In our community there is a great need.  There are a lot of at risk children and children that may not get nutrition for an entire day, so we definitely want to reduce that and make sure every child has a meal before they close out the end of the day," said Celeste McNeil, Tift Area YMCA Marketing & Communication Director.

McNeil said the kids also participated in exercise and educational activities to promote healthy living.

She said the Tift area YMCA is collaborating with the Housing Authority to implement the first "Food for Thought" after school program later this year.

For more information, or to find out how you can get involved, call the Tift area YMCA at (229)391-9622, or visit: www.tiftareaymca.org
