New Colquitt High School plan moves forward

Superintendent Samuel DePaul Superintendent Samuel DePaul

Despite concerns from residents, Colquitt County School officials plan to go ahead and build their new high school at the planned site along Doc Darbyshire Road.

Superintendent Samuel DePaul says they plan to break ground in the next month. Some residents are concerned the ground is too swampy and they worry about hazardous materials that could be shipped on a rail line right next to the property.

DePaul says the 200 acre site has been evaluated by engineers several times to ensure the location is safe.

"You have a veteran architect that has built schools all around the state," DePaul said. "He has been in our district for many years and has done a great jobs. Obviously they have to go through all the hoops with the state department of education. Permits with our county and working with the fire marshal. There is a check list."

He says the new location will be ideal next to Packer Park where the softball and baseball fields are located.
