Lowndes Co. SPLOST vote approaching

Valdosta and Lowndes County leaders are urging voters to support the penny sales tax referendum on the November ballot.

Wednesday city and county leaders took the media on a tour of past and future SPLOST projects.

Officials say they need the SPLOST revenue to keep the area growing.

Much of the revenue from the new tax would be used to build a new wastewater treatment plant mandated by the state. But supporters say past taxes have paid for lots of improvements.

"You've got James Rainwater Conference center that was funded by SPLOST, a lot of our parks and centers were funded by SPLOST, the parking deck at South Georgia Medical Center; So each and everyday we utilize these projects," said SPLOST Steering Committee Chairperson, Suzan Prince.

Over the next six years, SPLOST 7 is projected to bring in $150 million that would be divided among the five cities and the county.
