LEE COUNTY, GA (WALB) -

Progress is being made on a Lee County road project leaders hope will spur the state to get going on an even bigger project in Albany.

Public works is putting in the sub-base and storm drainage on the Westover Extension project.

The $445,000 project will connect Ledo Road near Walmart to Fussell Road behind Grand Island Golf Course. It should be finished by March.

Lee County Planning and Engineering Directory Bob Alexander said, "It'll help the community by uh making it more convenient to the driving public, reduce some of the traffic congestion we now have at Nottingham."

The long-term plan is to connect Westover Boulevard near the Albany Mall to Ledo Road underneath the bypass.

Initial studies have been done on that portion of the project, but it will likely be several years before any construction begins.
