COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

A group aiming to put a new Fred's dollar store in a shopping complex off St. Mary's road could be facing some challenges. The group spoke to Columbus City Council, hoping to get a head start on the project.

First Choice Property Development is looking to make significant expansions by bringing this new Fred's store to this part of the city. Columbus City Council members told the group that they need to comply with all the rules when it comes to laying doing the frame work for this new store.

Builders asked council if they could  start plotting off part the property, but many Council members wanted the group to wait and give the public a chance to weigh in before zoning takes place.

Rick Jones with the City Planning Department says that he is hopeful a plan can be worked out for both the city and the developers of the new Fred store.

"Our objective is to make sure that we don't discourage them from developing, because I think it is a good site for Fred's," Jones said.

Columbus City Council members voted to approve a zoning measure that will allow St. Francis Hospital to build a 380 space parking lot behind the hospital grounds. Nearly 50 property owners who could be impacted by this new lot were given the opportunity to voice their concerns about these proposed changes.

There is no word just yet on when construction will begin on this new lot.
