Byne Memorial to celebrate 50 years of deaf ministry, Bobbie Carter

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

On October 20th, Byne Memorial Church will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its deaf ministry and one of the people who helped start it, Bobbie Carter.

Her friend, Ann Singletary, had Carter explain how important her role was.

"We go to church and some people talk and I don't understand so I have to depend on the interpreter," Carter translated. "I've been with her 50 years, if I (Carter) wasn't there to interpret for her (Singletary), I don't know what I would have done."

Carter's inspiration to become head of the deaf ministry came from reading a Bible verse from the book of Matthew.

"Those that have ears to hear, let them hear and it was as if someone spoke to me, and I'm sure it was the Holy Spirit," Carter said. "What about the people that have ears but can't hear?"

Carter says the group of translators has also helped people with doctor's appointments, trips to the hospital, job training, buying cars and others.

"Even though you can hear her words," said Byne Memorial Church pastor Matthew Nance. "Her hands will be moving because her hands are tied to her heart and her heart is to communicate to deaf people, that's just who she is."

Every second Sunday at 6pm, the hearing impaired are invited to worship alongside other members of the deaf community at Byne Memorial Church.
