DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

A new task force is scheduled to meet Wednesday to begin fixing a long standing public safety issue affecting those who live in the DeKalb County portion of Atlanta.

Councilwoman Natalyn Archibong announced the formation of the District 5 Atlanta-in-DeKalb Police Jurisdiction task force to find ways to ensure 911 calls are routed to the correct emergency center and first responders are dispatched appropriately and quickly.

Residents living in Lake Claire, Candler Park, Edgewood, Kirkwood, East Lake and East Atlanta who call 911 are often routed to DeKalb County 911 even though they are covered by the Atlanta Police Department.

"I don't know of anyone in a life-threatening situation but I do know that we're still getting concerns from constituents about being in Atlanta in DeKalb and having their cell phone call bounce to a 911 center outside of Atlanta," said Archibong.

Archibong said those calls then have to be transferred to Atlanta's emergency response center, which can waste precious time.

Christian Enterkin, of Kirkwood, said she has been placed on hold for as long as eight minutes waiting to reach the correct dispatcher.

"They redirect your call to APD and even if it's a violent crime, you're on hold and then on hold again, so it takes up a lot of response time," said Enterkin.

Enterkin, who is a candidate for the council seat now held by Archibong, said Archibong's recent push for the creation of the task force is a campaign ploy.

"It's a day late and a dollar short. We've been complaining about this for years. Now a month before the election she's putting a task force together.  It doesn't sit well," said Enterkin.

Archibong said other high-level talks on this issue have taken place in the past.

Archibong said she hopes to have a solution within 90 days.
