Georgia Historical Society names trustees

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Tuesday was a big day for the Georgia Historical Society. They named their 2014 trustees who are appointed by Gov. Nathan Deal.

Billy Pane, who is the chairman of the Augusta National and Arthur Blank, founder of Home Depot and owner of the Georgia Falcons, were appointed as trustees.

Children from the Savannah-Chatham Public School System also attended the event dressed in historical costume because the event names the characters featured in the annual Georgia Historical Festival.

The event aims to teach children about history.

"The essence of what it means to be an American is in the story of our nation and when we want to know what it means to be an American - we have to go and study our history to learn about why our country was founded - the nature of our freedoms - the sacrifices that were made," said Dr. W. Todd Groce, president and CEO of the Georgia Historical Society.

Georgia Power is one of the organizations sponsors and they donated a check for $65,000 to the Georgia Historical Society.
