Video shows alleged prisoner abuse

The family of Miguel Jackson and Kelvin Stevenson posted a video to YouTube in August they say shows a violent beating by detention officers.

The alleged beating took place at Smith State Prison located in Glenville, GA, just outside of Savannah.

A representative for the family said the video was released to them from an attorney working the case.

CBS Atlanta News can't independently verify that the men on the video are Jackson and Stevenson getting beaten. But, family members confirmed the information and showed CBS Atlanta News more pictures of the inmates after the attack.

"Miguel Jackson and Kelvin Stevenson were beaten inhumanely," Pastor Kenneth Glasgow said. "So, we are bringing attention to it. Trying to get people to know that people in prison are people first."

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigations, they were called in to investigate the incident as a use of force case. Other than that, Sherry Lang with the GBI said they could not comment on an open investigation.

The Georgia Department of Corrections also said they could not make a comment on the case because it is currently an active lawsuit.

Family members of Jackson and Stevenson said they want justice against the officers involved.

At this point, they did not comment on what started the alleged abuse between the inmates and the officers.

Since it was posted on YouTube, the video has received thousands of hits.

"We want for human beings not to be treated unfairly," Glasgow said. "Whether they are in prison or not. Might I add, they were handcuffed as well, while they were beaten with this object, this hammer."

Stevenson is currently serving time in prison for rape.

Jackson is serving time in prison after he was convicted of aggravated assault and armed robbery charges.
