COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

The Muscogee County School District (MCSD) confirms that students at Veterans Memorial Middle School have been evacuated due to a gas leak on the property.

"Sometime this afternoon, a plant services lawn mower struck the gas meter," says Scott Thomann, Security Director for MCSD. "Part of the gas meter broke, and started to expel gas. The kids were evacuated, and the gas company has arrived on the scene, turned off all the gas, and the kids have been released, and they're home safe by now."

All students were evacuated to North Columbus Elementary School, The principal notified all of the parents to pick their students up at that location.

According to MCSD Security, the gas leak has been sealed. School is likely to resume as usual by tomorrow, September 25.
