High school athletes get peanut butter

Athletic teams at Portal Middle-High School have a new resource in their training - peanut butter. The Georgia Farm Bureau and Georgia Peanut Commission delivered 1,500 1lb jars to the school Monday.

Coaches had identified that the school's student athletes were not getting as many calories as they were expending during competition and practice.

"They were losing weight, and I mean muscle weight and their energy and stamina just weren't where they should be," stated football coach David NeSmith. "Peanut butter is a good way to put on muscle weight."

NeSmith said he thought it was a joke when GFB officials contacted him about the donaiton. But, he was delighted when he learned it was real.

Zippy Duval, president of Georgia Farm Bureau, Joe Boddiford, of the Georgia Peanut Commission, and others were on hand to make the presentation.

NeSmith said coaches and trainers will be serving up peanut butter sandwiches after weight training sessions and around practice as well to get athletes the calories they need.
