Moultrie Tech offering free GED practice tests this week

Moultrie Technical College will administer free GED practice tests on Thursday as a part of literacy week.

1.3 million adult Georgians are at literacy levels below the eight grade. Experts say that problem costs the state $2.1 billion annually. For some southwest Georgians, getting a GED is the first step to help lower both of these numbers

"Tired of hard labor and working at plants. I just want to do something better," said MTC GED Program student Percy Jones.

Among residents 25 years or older in Turner, Worth, Tift and Colquitt County, 26 percent of them do not have a high school diploma or GED. Director of Adult Education Melissa Burtle says there are many factors that contribute to that statistic.

"People just get frustrated sometimes with the school system," Burtle said. "Maybe they are not mature enough to finish, a lot of times life just gets in the way."

Enrollment in the GED program at Moultrie Tech is on a month-to-month basis. If you are thinking about taking the practice test, officials would like to remind you to plan for at least a 3 hour window starting from 5 p.m.

The practice test as well as the GED program at Moultrie Tech are free to attend.
