WEST POINT, GA (WTVM) -

A man was shot by police in West Point after reportedly hitting an officer with his car.

Investigators said the suspect, 26-year-old Jaquezmon Raynard McCray of Lannett, was attempting to escape from a checkpoint near I-85 after he was caught with marijuana.

According to officials, McCray was so intent upon fleeing from a traffic stop at Exit 2 in West Point, he didn't care that a police officer was standing in front of his car, or that police had their guns drawn ready to fire.

"[An officer] asked for his identification, explained to him that this was a traffic safety checkpoint.  [McCray] said, 'I don't have my license with me.' The officer noticed narcotics, asked him to put the vehicle in park and step out of the vehicle so he could speak with him, at which point  [McCray] attempted to flee and actually struck the officer," said Captain Robert Fawley.

In addition to the drugs, investigators said McCray was wanted for a probation violation warrant in Alabama.

Investigators said the officer who was injured was addressing a different vehicle stopped at the checkpoint when he was hit by McCray. Other officers responded with force and despite suffering a gunshot wound, witnesses said McCray was able to speed away so quickly, he was out of sight within three seconds.

McCray made it a mile down the road to the West Point Housing Authority where he jumped out of his moving car and tried to hide in one of the apartments.

After he jumped out, McCray's vehicle crashed into the corner of a building and that's when residents began calling 911 to alert dispatchers that an injured man was on the premises.   Police found McCray a short time later and took him into custody.

Because of the serious nature of McCray's injuries, he was flown to a hospital in Atlanta for treatment, but he is now listed in stable condition and expected to be released soon. The officer who was hit by the car is also expected to survive.

This is not the first time an officer from the West Point Department has been injured at a traffic stop.  In fact, the Chief of Police was involved in a very similar incident in April 2008 when he was dragged 89 feet by a driver attempting to flee before handing over his driver's license.
