ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Dougherty County leaders may try to reopen a closed library after non-profit groups that said they were interested in taking over the building backed out.

Two months ago, six organizations approached Dougherty County leaders about using the Southside Branch Library.

But when the county asked them to submit formal applications so commissioners could pick the best bid, no group submitted an application.  Now, county leaders say they may reopen the branch.

"Our hope really is that perhaps we can do at least what we did with Westtown and reopen it as a library.  Because that community really, really does need it," said Gloria Gaines, Dougherty County Commissioner.

Gaines said the county will not sell the building.  She also said commissioners will revisit the bidding process with the county administrator to try to make it more appealing to groups who want to use it.
