ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany resident and Advocacy Resource Center Special Olympian Antron Shepherd has been named Athlete of the Month for September by Special Olympics of Georgia.

Shepherd will be honored with a special presentation on Wednesday, September 25 at 5:15 p.m. at Gordon Park in Albany. Bill Stanfill, a former defensive end of the Miami Dolphins will make the presentation.

According to the ARC, Antron has been with Albany ARC Special Olympics for more than 10 years. He competes in basketball, bowling, softball, flag football, bocce and volleyball. Antron has won more than 40 medals in his athletic career.

The Center boasts in Antron's positive attitude, saying that he never complains, goes above and beyond what is expected of him, and is encouraging to his fellow athletes.

The Albany ARC Masters Level Special Olympics program is a year-round program of physical fitness, sports training, and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for adults with intellectual disabilities.

The program is unique in that it accommodates competitors at all ability levels by assigning them to "competition divisions" based on both age and actual performance ability.

The Albany ARC Masters Level Special Olympics program is funded in part by the United Way of Southwest Georgia.
