SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah Fire and Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department responded to a possible drowning victim in the Savannah River around 10 a.m. on Sunday.

"I just saw the guy in the river go under. I asked for help and I couldn't do anything, just call 911," said witness Joyce Arnsdorff.

Witnesses told police that an African American male in his late teens or early twenties fell into the river around 9:45 a.m. and was yelling for help. Some people threw the male a rope, but he was unable to retrieve it and went underwater.

Dive crews, boats and personnel from the U.S. Coast Guard are on the scene searching the Savannah River near the Waving Girl statue.

The Lincoln street ramp is closed while operations are underway.
