Woman sentenced for embezzling funds

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A Savannah woman was sentenced earlier this week to 51 months in prison for embezzling money from two senior citizens.

Janeen Lynette Davis, 33, worked as a caregiver for a couple and gained access to their finances. Over a year, Davis embezzled nearly $70,000 from the couple's bank accounts, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Georgia.

Davis has a long criminal history can has been convicted of similar financial crimes nationwide, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

"This defendant took advantage of an elderly couple who, at this point in their lives, should be enjoying the fruits of their years of hard work.  The United States Attorney's Office and its law enforcement partners will aggressively investigate and pursue charges against those who seek to take advantage of the vulnerable members of our society," said United States Attorney Edward J. Tarver in a statement.

Davis was ordered to pay restitution and to serve five years of supervised release after her prison term.
