Former POW's honored with ceremony

A motorcade of motorcycles escorted buses carrying 85 former prisoners of war onto the campus of Georgia Southwestern State University Friday night to a ceremony honoring P-O-Ws and troops still listed as missing in action.

Friday was POW/MIA Recognition Day in Americus. Former POW's and representatives of those Missing in Action came from all over the country for the ceremony.

In 1978, President Jimmy Carter set this week aside to acknowledge war heroes and pay respect for those still missing.

POW's and those missing in action are from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Cold War,  Afghanistan and Iraq.

90 year old John Mims, was a POW for four years during World War Two. He thought he wouldn't make it out alive.

"Never had no idea, except God loved me. A lot of the time the Japanese would try to beat me to death and ask me why I wouldn't die, I said because the Lord loves me," said John Mims.

Jim Moyer says it's time to acknowledge war heroes and their service to our country.

"Over 120,000 haven't made it home yet. I think it's time we stand up. I think that's what our government would want us to do," said Jim Moyer.

Mims says his journey as a POW took him to Japan. He's the only one in his company who made it out.

"They were going to march us into the cold mines where we were working and blow it up so we couldn't testify against them," said John Mims.

Families of those who still wait for their loved ones to come home were also recognized.

"If it were your brother or father who went off to war to defend your rights and liberty, due to the actions they took, they were not able to come home,' said  Jim Moyer.

Moyer says we must never forget and keep the promise that they'll come home.

There was also a candlelight service Friday night for those missing in action.

There will be another recognition ceremony Saturday at 12:30 a.m. The Vietnam Memorial Traveling Wall will be on display on the GSW campus until noon Saturday.
