Request to visit student prompts school lockdown

TIFTON, GA (WALB) -

Tift County High Students and teachers were on alert for part of the afternoon when their school was on lockdown.

Tift County High School went under lock down around 12:30 Friday afternoon after a former student came to campus and asked to see a female student who was in class.

When the school asked him to leave, the man circled the campus.

The school's resource officer put the school in lockdown as a precaution for about twenty minutes, but school officials say no one was in danger.

"I don't think you ever can say anything is excessive when it comes to the safety of your children.  I'd much rather someone err on the side of doing a little more than they thought was necessary than not doing enough," said Public Information Officer  Stacey Beckham.

The lock down was reduced to code yellow a little before 1:00. School officials gave the all clear around 2:15 this afternoon.
