Soup kitchen opens in Metter

METTER, GA (WTOC) -

Volunteers and supporters of Candler County's first soup kitchen gathered for lunch to celebrate their new location.

The Candler Area Hunger Relief Mission began moving into a office front on South Leroy Street back in June. With the kitchen and furnishings in place, the meal served as an open house. Organizers feel their community may not realize how great the problem has become.

"We've heard that over and over," said Rev. Ernie Franks, one of the organizers. "But we've been serving 100-150 meals each weekend, that's Saturday and Sunday alone."

The kitchen serves breakfast and lunch from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each Saturday and Sunday. For more information, visit https://www.facebook.com/groups/CCSK1/
