Shaquille O’Neal’s mother keynote speaker for Hope Harbour luncheon

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

She's the mother of one of the most famous basketball players of all time, and she was in Columbus Thursday delivering a message of hope.

Lucille O'Neal, the mother of Shaquille "Shaq" O'Neal, was the keynote speaker this afternoon for Hope Harbour's annual Celebration of Hope Luncheon.

O'Neal, who has written a book about her struggles of being a teenage mother, living in poverty and addiction, talked about the importance of giving back.

What I want people to know is that they're not alone, and I want them to know that we care, and I also want to encourage all of us, all of us need a word of encouragement coming from somewhere," said O'Neal. "So I'm here today to just share my life and encourage people to keep doing what they're doing, and to support the Hope Harbour house and support the individuals that do need our help."

Today's luncheon is the major fundraising event for Hope Harbour, which provides services for victims of domestic violence in six counties.
