Four arrested in sex offender compliance check

SPRINGFIELD, GA (WTOC) -

Four people were arrested in a multi-agency effort in Effingham County as part of a sex offender compliance sweep.

Operation Double Check, which focuses on compliance and enforcement, was carried out Thursday by 28 local, state and federal officers, including the U.S. Marshals Service, the Effingham County Sheriff's Office, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and more.

The process involves physically verifying the offender's residence, employment and compliance with their registration requirements.

The operation resulted in the finding and verifying of 83 sex offenders. Of the 83 offenders who were verified, six were also on state parole and 40 were on state probation.

One person was arrested on a probation violation and possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute. Several bags of individually packaged marijuana were seized from his home, according to the U.S. Marshal's Office.

One person was arrested on existing warrants for failure to register as a sex offender in Brooks County, GA, and failure to appear in Effingham County. State parole and state probation officers each arrested one person for violations of their conditions of supervision.
