COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Alex Komendantov, 74, turned himself into the Muscogee County Jail yesterday, September 18, 2013, at around 6:30 p.m., and has been released on bond.

Komendantov was the driver involved in the car accident that lead to the death of Cpl. Keith Slay and the hospitalization of Dep. Brad Evans on July 30, 2013.

Police say he has been charged with Vehicular Homicide in the Second Degree, Failure to Yield to a Law Enforcement Vehicle, and Improper Lane Change.

On July 30, Slay and his partner were on their way to a meth drug bust near Flat Rock Rd. when they crashed on Veterans Pkwy. According to the police report, Slay and his partner were speeding in the turning lane when Komendantov tried to merge into their lane. Slay swerved out of the way to avoid the car, and crashed into the pole.

The bond amount was $3,250 plus fees. Komendantov paid with a credit card, and did not use a bonding company.
