Georgia Aquarium offers new penguin encounter

ATLANTA, GA (CBS46) -

Guests at the Georgia Aquarium now can have up-close interactions with African penguins, thanks to the facility's new Penguin Encounter.

The aquarium began offering the encounters earlier this month. It's designed as a special educational experience where guests will not only interact with the birds, but will also learn about how the staff cares for them.

"We hope to inspire them about conservation and hope they get as excited as we are about animals," said Erin Morlang, a senior trainer at the aquarium.

Over the course of 30 minutes, guests will have the opportunity to touch one of Georgia Aquarium's African penguins, and will leave with a greater understanding and appreciation of the birds.

"Every time we interact with our animals, it's an opportunity to train," said Morlang. "So everybody that's participating with us is essentially being an animal trainer during that time."

Program participants will receive a souvenir photo of their experience. For more information, click here.
